Professor Gina Osterloh (pronouns she/her/hers) is an artist and Associate Professor of Art at The Ohio State University. Gina Osterloh is a Guggenheim Fellow, named by the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation in 2024.
Photography is the conceptual ground for Professor Osterloh’s interdisciplinary art. Osterloh's photography, video, performance art, and steel sculptures with text activate photographic conditions including replica, representation, flatness and volume, presence and absence, illusion and the Real, desire and repulsion. Photo tableau is central to her work– a dynamic place to hold the complexities of growing up multiracial Filipino American in Ohio, questions of perception, and how a viewer perceives difference in tandem with sameness.
Solo exhibitions and performances include Gina Osterloh: Mirror Shadow Shape at the Columbus Museum of Art, her first museum survey with accompanying book including work from 2005-2020. Her Demilitarized Zone / Image Without Weapon at MOCA Detroit; Gina Osterloh at Higher Pictures Generation (NY); ZONES at Silverlens (Manila, Philippines); Shadow Woman as part of the performance series En Cuatro Patas at The Broad Museum (Los Angeles); Group Dynamic and Improper Light at LACE (Los Angeles); and Anonymous Front at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts (San Francisco). Group exhibitions include Multiply Identify Her at the International Center of Photography Museum (NY); Not Visual Noise at Ateneo University (Quezon City, Philippines); and Energy Charge: Connecting with Ana Mendieta at the Arizona State University Art Museum. Awards and residencies include a Nancy Graves Foundation Grant for Visual Art, a Greater Columbus Art Council Grant, Ohio Arts Council Grant for Individual Excellence, The Wayne P. Lawson Columbus Museum of Art Acquisitions Award, a Fulbright in the Philippines, Artist-In-Residence at the Woodstock Center of Photography, and Artist-In-Residence at the Headlands Center for the Arts in Marin, California. Osterloh’s work has been reviewed in publications including the New Yorker Magazine, Art Forum, Art in America, the Brooklyn Rail, Aperture Magazine, and Art Asia Pacific. Gina Osterloh has an MFA in Studio Art from the University of California, Irvine (2007) and a BA in Communications/Media Studies with a Minor in Spanish from DePaul University (1996). Her work is represented by Silverlens Galleries (Manila, Philippines and New York) and Higher Pictures Generation (New York).
