Portfolio Reviews

B.A.

At the end of the first year of Art Foundation course work, every student who wishes to pursue a degree in the Department of Art will apply to the B.A. portfolio review to determine if they are demonstrating the basic artistic skills and creative thinking necessary to continue course work and pursue a Bachelor of Arts major in Art. All pre-art majors must undergo this portfolio review. Upon passing this review, the student enters their second year, where they may select from a core of introductory classes offered in each art medium; gaining experience that will help them decide between the two degrees, BA (Bachelor of Arts) or BFA (Bachelor of Fine Arts), by the end of the second year.

B.F.A.

Students intending to pursue a Bachelor of Fine Arts (B.F.A.) major in the Department of Art are required to pass an additional Portfolio Review. The portfolio is reviewed by the Area Coordinator and faculty of the chosen area any time after the B.A. portfolio review but must occur by the end of the third quarter (core year) of enrollment in the BA degree program, usually spring quarter of the sophomore year. Areas in the Department of Art are: Art & Technology, Ceramics, Glass, Painting/Drawing, Photography, Printmaking or Sculpture.

Contents of the B.F.A. portfolio should represent a variety of work done in the second year core but should specifically represent the area of concentration to which the student is applying. Before applying, the potential B.F.A. student must make an appointment to meet with faculty in their area of interest to discuss their strengths and desired choice of concentration. BFA students may request to change to another emphasis area with the support of their art advisor and the coordinator of the other area.
