Photography has a long tradition at The Ohio State University dating back to the 1880s. The Photography Area is committed to a continuous exploration and redefinition of what it means to use photography as an art endeavor. Part of the strength of our program comes from being part of a very large university community. We encourage cross-fertilization not only with other areas in the Department of Art, but also with areas outside the department.

Three professors and visiting artists form the core of Photography and cover all aspects of photographic production. A technical assistant supervises the photographic facilities located in Haskett Hall and include: black and white labs, color gang lab with 30'' processor for C prints, alternative processes lab, large print lab, enlargers and view cameras through 8'' x 10'', lighting studio, and digital photo lab with 22 Mac stations, 8K film recorder, 4 flat bed scanners, 4 Epson 17" printers, and 2 Epson 9800 printers.

Students complement studio practice with a historical and theoretical understanding of the medium and to that end, we offer history and theory classes within the Photography Area as well as outside of the Department of Art through the Departments of Art History and Art Education. The Fine Arts Library located in the Wexner Center for the Arts holds over 40,000 volumes and houses the Rinhart Collection of daguerreotypes, ambrotypes, tintypes, 19th-century paper prints, as well as a collection of 20th-century prints. The library also houses over 6,000 photographic titles, which constitutes one of the top five university collections in the country.

In addition, photography students have access to extensive computer facilities for digital imaging and manipulation such as the state of the art Fergus-Gilmore Computer Studio that features high-end archival inject printers, high resolution glassless slide scanners, film burner for 35mm and 4 x 4 film sizes, and color match software. Numerous other University computer labs are also available including the Advanced Computing Center for the Arts and Design, known internationally as one of the top centers in animation and 3D modeling.
