Academics

The Department of Art fulfills its mission by offering a broad range of courses that focus on creative production and visual literacy, and through the active research and exhibition activities of faculty and graduate students. New courses have been created that keep pace with the rapidly changing conditions in the discipline. Creative applications of technologies have been embraced not only through the creation of a new studio area, Art and Technology, but also through the integration of new technologies into the core program. The department simultaneously developed new GEC and elective courses that emphasize new methodologies in visualization and expose students from other disciplines to concepts and principles of contemporary art making. These recent changes have created a stronger link to our mission, made improvements to the curricular structure for our majors, and a greater contribution to the OSU general undergraduate curriculum.

Learning experiences are enhanced through the exhibition of faculty and student work. These exhibitions are concrete and objective statements of the standards set forth by the program and the current activity in contemporary art. The department is also fortunate to be able to access exhibitions and events at the Wexner Center, the Columbus Museum of Art, The Ohio Art League and other private and community galleries in the region as enrichments to our learning experiences.
