Richard Harned is a professor of art at the Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio, where he is Undergraduate Studies Chair and heads the Glass Art program. He has been a faculty member at Rhode Island School of Design, Providence; the University of Tennessee, Knoxville; Arkansas State University, Jonesboro; and a visiting artist nationally and internationally, at Academa Minerve, Groningen, the Netherlands; Aichi University of Education, Aichi, Japan; Tokyo Glass Art Institute, Tokyo, Japan; Haystack Mountain School of Crafts, Deer Island, Maine; and the Pilchuck School, Seattle, Washington. He has been an artist in residence at Headlands Center for the Arts in Sausalito, California, and in the Iron Foundry of the Arts/Industry program of the John Michael Kohler Art Center in Sheboygan Wisconsin. He founded the Glass Axis, a not for profit workshop and artists organization in Central Ohio, and has served as a panelist and site visitor for national and regional art organizations and as treasurer and president of the Glass Art Society.

Harned’s work has evolved from small utilitarian pieces and abstract glass objects to room-sized kinetic sculptures built to explore the use of light, movement, and technology in art. His sculpture combines the aesthetic beauty of glass with the drama of complex moving constructions, embellished with decorative and symbolic elements. His message is about the connection of ideas to the dynamism of the physical world. His pieces are often presented with a humorous post-modern warning about technology’s impact on nature. His work has been in 11 solo and 180 group exhibitions, in 27 states and 6 countries. Harned has been the recipient of an array of Individual Artists Fellowships in sculpture, craft and media arts from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Ohio Arts Council and the Greater Columbus Arts Council. He received his BFA in 1973 and MFA in 1977 from Rhode Island School of Design, Providence, RI, under Dale Chihuly.
