Carolyn was born and raised in Akron, Ohio. She graduated from Ohio University in 2008 with a B.F.A. in Art History and Ceramics. Carolyn has spent the last few years traveling around the country and working in different studios. She spent a year working at the Women’s Studio Workshop in Rosendale, New York. She has also been a Juried Kiln God Residency recipient at Watershed Center for the Ceramic Arts as well as a Technical Assistant at Haystack Mountain School of Craft. Most recently, she completed a year long residency at Red Lodge Clay Center in Red Lodge, Montana.
Carolyn’s work explores contemporary illustrations of nature used within the home. She relates naturalistic imagery used in home decorating to ideas of femininity and fairy tale and uses these relationships to describe societal values. She states that these values set up an expectation of reality that falls much more into the realm of fantasy, leading to a very specific, yet unachievable definition of nature and a need for artificial landscaping, both inside and outside the home.
