The M.F.A. degree is a two-year program, or a minimum of six quarters, designed to permit a concentrated effort in a student's field of specialization. The degree is widely recognized as a terminal degree for college teaching. The M.F.A. permits a wide range of options, and all hours must be graduate level.
- A minimum of 30 credit hours in the major studio field. A maximum of 18 thesis credit hours (generally two to five credit hours are recommended), four graduate seminar hours (895), plus two additional seminar hours (896) required for GTAs (can be credited toward major studio requirements), and six hours of group critiques within the major studio field (one credit per each quarter).
- A minimum of 15 and a maximum of 30 graduate credit hours in studio elective, not limited to one studio discipline, outside major studio field. Examples: Department of Art Studio, Dance, Music, Theatre and Design.
- A minimum of 15 and a maximum of 30 graduate credit hours in University Studies, with five hours required in History of Art. Examples: History of Art, Philosophy, International Studies, Creative Writing, Criticism.
